(early itteration of Strawberry Girl. needle turned applique will finish her face)
My conversations with Earth are always around food. My conversation with food as always around the season. What do I look forward in the summer- summer fruits. And to me, the first taste of summer are strawberries. Juicy delicous, red and ripe. Bursting with flavor.
When I starting thinking about Conversation with Earth, I knew that I wanted to focus on seasons. I have always lived in a place with four seasons Each one is special and unique.
but I might say, since it is June- My favorite season is summer. As a very young girl I remember strawberry picking with my mom. That memory is one of the sweetness of a ripe but tiny strawberry.
When I became a young adult I took my children to a local farm in Gaithersburg MD We would pick until we could eat no more. My grandchildren also picked in these same fields
Tart, sweet, juice bursting all over our fingers. We would savor he family time outside as well as the sweet fruit.
Strawberry Goddess bring the first fruits of summer. She is large and strong becuase she must work those fileds. Tending in the winter, she emerges with baskets and bushels of berrys to make jam and jelly, strawberry tarts and milk shakes All the foods I also love in warm weather.
Needle turned Applique I tried a pink mylar for her nails, but changed to paint.
My goddess is machine peiced as well as raw edged applique, this time I used needle tunred applique for her arms and face.
I love to use hand dyed and commerical fabrics together. I see Strawberry Goddess walking through the fields of flowers, sparkling, glowing from the warmth of the sun. Her skin is pink from the bright summer sun. My conversation with her is telling her how grateful I am that she has arrived.
Not just cotton, but dyed wool locks add texture to her strawberry hair.
My conversation with the earth are one of gratitude. I am grateful for the sunshine on my skin. I am grateful for the opportunity to eat summer fruits.
